Two lab members win 2021 AERA Div. C Shark Tank Grand Prize

Two of our lab members Licia Henneberg (freshman Psychology major) and Xiao-Yin Chen (UGA PhD student and lab alum) have received the $1,000 Shark Tank Grand Prize from the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Division C (Learning & Instruction) Equity and Inclusion and Graduate Student Committees.

Licia and Yin were finalists for the competition, which meant they had to submit a five-minute video and 2000-word paper describing their proposed research. Then they had to defend their proposed research idea live on Zoom before “sharks” (accomplished equity and diversity scholars in education–Drs. Christy Byrd, NC State; Hefer Bembenutty, CUNY; Terrell Morton, Missouri; and Ms. Brittany Marshall, Rutgers; and Ms. Micaela Harris, Vanderbilt) and a large audience on Saturday in conjunction with AERA’s annual conference.  The competition was intense, as all of their graduate student competitors presented stellar projects.

We look forward to carrying out this project together in the coming year. Check out their award-winning video!
